Ardisia is a spreading ground cover that makes a dense mat of foliage. It grows best in moist, but well-drained, acidic soil, and in partial to full shade. Mature foliage is dark green, but new growth in the spring may be light green, copper or bronze. Leaves are thick, glossy and leathery. Produces small star shaped pale pink flowers that are present late summer. This ground cover also puts off small red drupes in the fall. This is not a ground cover to use under foot.
